The Palatinate Orchestra

Outreach

THE SOCIETY WOULD LIKE TO THANK ITS PATRONS AND SPONSORS.

Not only does the Palatinate Orchestra pride itself on delivering outstanding performances of challenging and exciting repertoire all year round, but DUPO also are involved in a number of outreach projects, both in the local community and further afield.

In June 2017, the orchestra flew to Jersey where they ran a day of outreach workshops at the Jersey Academy of Music, teaching local young musicians and performing alongside the children in a joint afternoon concert. The workshops were a great success, with members of the Palatinate Orchestra leading groups of the children in learning new repertoire with a team of teachers from the academy, then later coming together to rehearse as a joint orchestra. The project was run in conjunction with Hautlieu School, where the young instrumentalists performed alongside members of the Palatinate Orchestra in a concert that evening. It was s truly exciting and rewarding experience for the Palatinate Orchestra (and hopefully the students too!) and we really look forward to continuing our relationship with the Jersey Academy of Music in future.

In addition to this, the Palatinate Orchestra engages in outreach in the local community of Durham, for example hosting an annual School’s Concert for local primary schools. Over 400 children and their teachers are invited to come to learn about classical music in a fun and interactive way, with the aim of educating, enthusing and inspiring the younger generation to pursue a musical education.

In June 2019, our members enjoyed working on a brand new outreach project with the pupils of St Margaret's Primary School. Taking inspiration from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, pupils created class artworks and then, working with DUPO member and PhD student Rob King, used these as stimuli to compose their own pieces of music. These were performed by a joint orchestra of DUPO members and the children themselves, in place of the promenade movements of Pictures at an Exhibition, with the remaining movements being performed by DUPO Symphony. This new experience was exciting for Orchestra members and the children of St Margaret's alike.

If you or your institution are interested in working with us on any outreach projects over this coming year, please do get in contact with us via email at palatinate.orchestra@durham.ac.uk. We’d love to hear from you!
